Cornwall is one of my favourite places in the UK, I have so many fond memories of visiting when I was young with my grandparents. Mr T also spent a good part of his childhood holidays in Cornwall so it has been on our ‘to visit’ list with the children for a few years.
We were slightly dreading travelling over 350 from our home in Yorkshire to St Merryn, Nr Padstow, but the children handled it well and made us proud. We decided to travel through the night, and packed the car before bedtime. Just after midnight we woke the children and tucked them and their pillows into our car as quietly as is possible with 2 excited children, and two children who had completely no idea whats happening but could feel the excitement buzzing in the air.
Here are our favourite parts from our holiday;
Treyarnon Bay
One of my favourite things about Cornwall is the beautiful beaches that seem to go on forever, with golden sand and clear blue sea. It was Ava’s first time on the beach too, since Mr T had his operations last year we didn’t have a holiday or visit the beach. On her first visit, all she wanted to do was eat the sand, but she soon learnt it wasn’t very nice and didn’t try much more.
Our favourite beach is Treyarnon Bay. It’s a beautiful beach near St Merryn, with a north west facing cove, surrounded by low cliffs and backed by sand dunes. The water is beautiful and clear and it has a good selection of rock pools, small caves and things for the children to explore.
Glendurgan Gardens
National Trust – Nr Falmouth
Glendurgan is my favourite places to visit in Cornwall. We visited for the first time in 2008 and loved the maze, swings, picturesque walks and little cove. They sell the most delicious cream teas and Cornish ice cream. The children’s favourite part was the swing (and the adults too), but they had a fantastic time all day. All the staff we met were really helpful and friendly, and one even offered to take a photo of us together which was really kind.
Padstow
Padstow is a beautiful little harbour town, its perfect for crabbing!
Lanhydrock
National Trust Property – Nr Bodmin
We decided to visit Lanhydrock on a pretty miserable day, partly to see the house and get out of the rain. We missed a lot of the magnificent grounds and walks, and we have already planned to go back on our next visit to Cornwall. The house is magnificent, and a perfect setting for an interesting history lesson, the children had so many questions to ask. Ava’s ‘Tula’ carrier came in really hand as it was quite busy and she enjoyed being able to see more.
The national trust had some worksheets to complete as we walked around which made the experience more magical for our eldest two children, and even Amy who is 3 enjoyed looking for the numbered trains which were hidden around the property
St Ives & The Hub
I love St Ives and its narrow cobbled streets and hills and slopes. We even spotted a seal in the harbour when we visited.
My Aunt and Uncles favourite restaurant ‘The Hub’ is located in St Ives. For the last 2 years we have heard so much about it, we had to visit, and we weren’t disappointed! The atmosphere was amazing, the setting was perfect (overlooking the harbour), the staff were knowledgeable and friendly and the food was superb! The best part for me was how child-friendly they were, they had a fantastic range of children’s meals and Amy was thrilled with her mini hot chocolate, from the children’s drinks menu.
