This is the easiest pizza dough recipe and makes PERFECT pizza every time.  We love a classic soft dough that’s sturdy enough to hold a tonne of toppings, but still soft and springy. I love this recipe uses a full bag 1.5kg bag of bread flour, it saves all the measuring! We split our dough into four equal parts and freeze the remaining three, saving energy and time for meals later in the month.

WARNING: This makes a LOT of pizza dough. This recipe makes around 8 x 10-12″ pizza bases OR 4 x  HUGE 15″ pizza bases depending on how thin you prefer the dough!

Savvy Savings

This recipe is perfect if you are looking to save money too. At just £19p per 10″ pizza base. Considering a similarly sized pizza from the takeaway would cost at least £6, you can afford to go a tiny bit wild with the toppings!

The Secret To Amazing Pizza

I think there are three secrets to a good pizza. The dough, the sauce and the way it’s cooked. This is my favourite dough recipe, you can recreate my favourite sauce recipe here, but the cooking is also VERY important.

In pizzerias, they cook the pizzas in a super hot oven for a short period of time (around 6-7 minutes). It’s impossible to recreate the same environment without a pizza oven, so the second best thing is to cook for longer on a lower temperature.

My top pizza tip is to use a pizza stone, we have this 15″ one. We have a very minimalist kitchen and I try to avoid gadgets, but I LOVE our pizza stone! It preheats with the oven so it gives the dough an initial burst of heat that helps to puff up the crust. The ceramic nature of the stone distributes the heat evenly, and it also draws moisture away from the pizza help to avoid a soggy base, and because the ceramic retains the heat, it also keeps our pizza lovely and warm when it comes out of the oven! If you don’t have a pizza stone, you can recreate a similar effect by using an upside-down oven tray.

Perfect Homemade Pizza Dough

You will love this soft and springy pizza dough.

  • 1.5 kg strong flour
  • 4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 14 g instant yeast
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 840 ml warm water
  • TOTAL COST £1.55
  1. Add all the ingredients into the bowl for your stand mixer with a dough arm, and begin mixing to bring all the dough together. Alternatively, you can mix knead by hand in a bowl.

  2. When the dough has come together, I remove from my stand mixer and knead by hand for ten minutes. This is because my stand mixer doesn't cope well with such a big mix of dough, and I find the kneading therapeutic!

  3. Divide this mixture into four equal parts, and place each one into an oiled freezer bag (at this point the dough can be refrigerated or frozen)

  4. Place the dough you want to use for your pizza back into your mixing bowl and cover with a clean tea towel

  5. Allow to rise at room temperature. The time for this will vary depending on the temperature of your room, usually 30 minutes to an hour. The dough should double in size.

  6. When it has risen, punch the dough down, and either roll or stretch into a pizza shape on a floured surface.

  7. Top as usual and then bake at 200c for 25 minutes or until the crust is starting to brown and the cheese is bubbling.

If you don’t have bread flour you can use plain flour, but the dough doesn’t have the same elasticity, and the cooked base isn’t quite as soft or light.
